A field guide, tested and true, from your local elopement photographer
Eloping is a romantic and intimate way to celebrate your love without the stress and complexity of a traditional wedding. Whether you’re escaping to a remote destination or simply opting for a low-key ceremony, packing for your elopement requires careful consideration to ensure that everything you need is at your fingertips. Unlike traditional weddings where you may hire a planner, your elopement is basically at your mercy. This just means staying organized from the start is super helpful!
From practical essentials to sentimental touches, here’s a comprehensive guide on things to include when packing for your elopement.
First and foremost, don’t forget the essential paperwork! This may include your marriage license, identification, passports (if you’re eloping abroad), and any other legal documents required for your destination. While Colorado is unique in that it doesn’t require a witness, check with your local requirements on best practices.
Choose attire that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful. Whether you’re wearing a traditional wedding gown, a chic pantsuit, or something in between, make sure it’s packed neatly and safely to avoid wrinkles or damage during travel. If you’re flying, I always recommend carrying on these personal items. Dont want to leave that to chance!
Special consideration for your feet! Comfort and practicality are the top considerations for an elopement, and if you’re coming to Colorado, Alaska or any of the places I tend to find myself, then you are definitely going to need structure. Hiking boots or sturdy tennis shoes for exploring is my #1 suggestion – you can always change into more formal shoes after the adventuring!
Lastly, at high altitude things can change quickly. I advice bringing layers for warmth and watching the weather prior to your departure. Here is another blog on how to Elope in the Alpine!
Don’t forget to accessorize! This might include jewelry, shoes, a veil, a tie, or any other accessories that complement your attire and personal style. An elopement emphasizes the experience; but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t add personal touches to it! Consider heirloom pieces, letters from family members, favorite food/drinks or even a card game to commemorate the moment! Check out this couple’s backpacking elopement in the Rockies!
Pack toiletries, medications, and any personal items you may need during your elopement, such as makeup, hair styling tools, and skincare products. Remember to consider the climate and location of your elopement when selecting these items. Items like sunscreen, bug spray, drammamine, chapstick and electrolytes are also highly encouraged if you are someone who likes to come prepared!
Of course, don’t forget the rings! These symbols of your commitment are an essential part of your elopement ceremony, so be sure to pack them securely.
If you’re writing your own vows or including special readings in your ceremony, make sure to bring printed copies or have them easily accessible on your electronic device.
Pro tip: if you have your vows written on your cell or electronically, taking the time the morning of your wedding to have you transcribe them into a beautiful booklet can be an incredible photo opportunity!
Capture candids and intimate moment of your elopement by bringing along your polaroid or disposable camera! The spontaneity of these fun cameras can lead to really fun memories looking back. Plus! They’re lightweight and easy to throw in a backpack if need be. Have you seen the size of Go Pro’s recently?!
Enhance the ambiance of your elopement with carefully selected ceremony décor, such as flowers, candles, or meaningful mementos. Keep in mind the logistics of transporting and setting up these items at your chosen location. Also keep in mind that some places do not allow larger installations like arches, so really if you can approach your elopement in nature with a ‘less is more’ attitude.
This is probably my most favorite tip! Stay energized and hydrated throughout your elopement by packing snacks and refreshments. Be sure to bring enough water, electrolytes, and a celebratory drink or two for the big hurrah! Snacks are especially important at higher altitudes, so if you are planning on something up in the mountains be sure to have sugar and carbs on hand for those moments when you least expect it.
Be prepared for any unexpected mishaps by packing an emergency kit with essentials such as first aid supplies, a sewing kit, stain remover, bobby pins, and any other items that may come in handy. I carry a Garmin if we are going anywhere where cell coverage might be spotty, as its better to have it and not need it. I also pack an emergency kit so we should have our bases covered on this one!
Keep all travel documents, including flight tickets, hotel reservations, and transportation details, organized and easily accessible. It’s also a good idea to have a copy of your elopement itinerary handy to ensure that everything runs smoothly on the big day.
Finally, consider including sentimental touches that add meaning and personalization to your elopement, such as love letters, a special song playlist, or meaningful gifts for each other.
In conclusion, packing for your elopement is an exciting part of the journey towards your special day. By carefully considering these essential items and personal touches, you can ensure that your elopement is everything you’ve dreamed of and more. Happy packing and best wishes for a beautiful and memorable celebration of love!
