While big weddings have their own charm and appeal, there are several big reasons why an intimate wedding can be a better choice for many couples. Not only are intimate weddings some of my favorite things to photograph, but I personally chose this route for my own wedding. Ive put together a guide on how to plan an intimate wedding, and why it may be the perfect fit for you.
The location of an intimate wedding is key, especially since you’ll need a place that can accommodate everyone you want to invite (typically under 30 guests). While it’s nowhere near the same dynamic as looking for a traditional venue, there are still things to consider when planning for a small group. Look for places like a garden, private home, museum, brewery, park or even national forest. If your guests will be traveling, you may need to find a venue that has lodging, or one that is nearby to several well-rated hotels.
A lot of couples find charm in hosting the ceremony at a private airbnb – and personally this is one of my favorite ways to plan an intimate wedding. However, before booking at any Airbnb/VRBO be sure to check with the host that they allow parties and gatherings. Groups can a liability for owners, and you don’t want to get caught on the wrong side of that legal discussion!
Lastly if you decide to have your ceremony in a public space like a national forest or park, you will need to double check on any permitting you may need for a ceremony. Not sure where to start, don’t worry – I am a pro at this and am eager to help!
Intimate weddings give you more flexibility when it comes to scheduling. Consider weekdays or shoulder seasons for better pricing. Afternoon weddings will give you enough time to party and still have dinner with your guests. Keep it short and sweet!
In considering the date, you will want a locals insight on seasonal weather. This is where it really helps to hire local vendors as experts to help you plan! As someone who knows Colorado very well and have lived here for the better part of 20 years, I can speak to it’s incredibly unpredictable-predictable weather patterns. Also if you are planning an intimate wedding in the mountains, altitude and elevation will alter weather patters and temperatures. So be sure to consider that as well!
Since your wedding is considered intimate, you won’t have a long guest list. This is totally a personal decision as to who you want to invite -but generally the idea of having an intimate wedding is to keep it small. So my personal advice is to keep it under 25.
There are a couple of reasons for this:
An intimate wedding gives you the opportunity to make each guest feel protected, appreciated, and special. Take the time to include personal touches that will make everyone feel welcome, such as customized wedding favors and handwritten notes to your guests.
The very essence of an intimate wedding is that it promotes intimacy and a romantic ambiance. With a smaller crowd, you can create an atmosphere that is warm, cozy, and filled with love. Whether you’re exchanging vows in a garden or an intimate venue, the setting will have an intimate feel that perfectly complements the love you and your partner share. Planning your intimate wedding should be all about indulging in the experience!

Planning a big wedding can be overwhelming and financially burdensome. By opting for an intimate celebration, you can significantly reduce stress and expenses. With fewer guests, you have more flexibility in terms of venue choices, catering options, and decor. Your budget can be allocated towards creating a more personalized and luxurious experience for your guests.
At an intimate wedding, it’s the little details that count. Splurge more on table decor since there will be fewer tables to decorate. You could go for something minimalistic like greenery and candles, or go all out with intricate glassware, napkins, and florals.
When it comes to meals for an intimate wedding, there are a lot of options. A buffet is an ideal option for smaller weddings because it allows guests to mingle around and choose what they want. You can also have a sit-down dinner, cocktail reception, or dessert party. Depending on your style, this may be a great time to bring out a custom cocktail that represents the two of you.
Planning an intimate wedding is an amazing way to celebrate the beginning of your married life with your closest family and friends. By keeping it simple, personalized, and true to you, you’ll be on your way to celebrating a beautiful wedding day.
In the end, whether you plan your intimate wedding, it’s important to prioritize what aligns with your vision and values as a couple. The beauty of an intimate wedding lies in the opportunity to create an intimate and personal experience for you and your loved ones, celebrating your love in a way that feels right to both of you.
