Other than it is one of the coolest experiences I have ever had. From start to finish, the process of hosting your intimate vow ceremony on top of 10,000 year old ice in Alaska is 10000000x worth it.
If you’re anything like me, some heights give me the heebie jeebies. But there’s something about riding in a helicopter that is downright soothing. Alaska in the spring and summer has so much daylight and the farther you get from the coast, the more clear skies. Plus, if you’re coming from out of state and landing in Anchorage, these helicopter companies for your elopement are all about an hour from the airport. So you really can’t go wrong with booking a ride at any time of day – but I would absolutely recommend giving yourself ATLEAST 45 minutes to enjoy the landing. We had an hour booked and while I am grateful for that time, I could have easily spent twice that and gotten some exploring in.
As the helicopter descends towards the glacier, the excitement and anticipation builds. The deafening sound of the rotors echoes through the air and the wind whips around you, making your hair and clothes dance wildly. As the helicopter approaches the glacier, the pilot skillfully maneuvers the helicopter into position, hovering just above the ice.
As the helicopter touches down on the glacier, the ground beneath you feels surprisingly solid and stable. You step out of the helicopter and onto the ice, feeling the crunch of your boots against the hard surface. The air is crisp and cold, and the bright sun reflects off the brilliant white of the glacier, making it difficult to look directly at it. So a pro tip: sunglasses can be key!
Once you have gotten out of the helicopter, the pilot/guide gives you some crampons for your shoes so there is no slipping. Once those badboys are on, you’ll be able to wander around a bit. If you can find some fresh running glacial water, I highly suggest drinking from it. It was unlike anything I have ever tasted before!
As you walk around on the glacier with your crampons on, you can’t help but be awestruck by the sheer size and beauty of the icy landscape. The ice seems to stretch out in all directions, creating a stunning and surreal environment. You can see deep crevasses and towering ice formations, all sparkling in the bright sunlight. It’s almost like being on another planet – and the best part is you get to say your vows here.
Overall, landing on a glacier by helicopter is an unforgettable experience that offers a unique perspective on the natural world. It’s a thrilling and exhilarating adventure that leaves you with a sense of wonder and appreciation for the incredible beauty of our planet.
Most helicopter companies in Alaska require that if you are getting married, or even having a ceremonial service, that you charter a private flight. While it is more expensive, it is 100% the way to go. Basically it means that you get the flight, and the pilot to yourself. Which means that you can decide which scenery best suits your vibe, and ask the pilot to take you there!
Alaska Helicopter Elopements range from 1-3 glacier landings. This means, that you have the option of landing on the glacier, on a mountain across from the glacier and then on a different part of the glacier-maybe a stark blue pool. These pilots fly the glacier multiple times a day, and are constantly scouting for these ideal spots.
Great question- and this really comes down to how much time you want to spend on the ice. Like anything in life, how much of it do you want??
In my experience, base pricing for a 4 seater chopper (the couple, myself and the pilot) for a 1 landing experience are approximately $2500 total. If you start to add on multiple stops, more bodies or longer ice times it just is extra charge. Definetly be prepared for that $2500 as a baseline!
Alaska is one of the few places on earth with glaciers accessible to humans, and believe it or not the state boasts over 100,000 of them! They are inextricably linked to the vast waterways in the state, and contribute greatly to the epic wildlife that also runs wild in Alaska. Glaciers are incredible, and if you have the chance to take a helicopter up to one I would highly recommend you go for it.
There are a few places where you can access glaciers via boat, hike, or in same cases drive up to them. Juneau and Seward have drive up access, which makes them some of the best places to see glaciers! If you’re looking for an all inclusive package for your elopement on a glacier in Alaska, then let me help make it happen!
Once on the glacier for this elopement, we spent about 10 minutes setting up a little tables-cape with flowers, a cake, and some decorative cloth. It fit nicely into a small duffle, and if you are thinking you can’t make something like this come together on your own I’m here to tell you first hand that creating this look can easily be done!
